Dennis L. Martire: A Lifelong Advocate for Workers’ Rights

Dennis L. Martire has dedicated his professional life to championing the rights of laborers across the United States. Currently serving as Vice President and Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), Martire has consistently fought to improve working conditions, secure fair wages, and advocate for equitable labor laws. His career, spanning over three decades, is a testament to his unwavering commitment to bettering the lives of countless workers.

Martire began his journey with LIUNA in 1990, shortly after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Government from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Starting as an international representative for the organization’s jurisdictional disputes department, he quickly climbed the ranks due to his dedication and expertise. By 2002, Martire had been elected Vice President and Regional Manager for LIUNA’s mid-Atlantic region, overseeing labor initiatives in key states such as Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

One of Martire’s notable achievements includes his instrumental role in unionizing workers involved in the Fluor-Lane 495 Hot Lanes Project in Virginia. Through his efforts, the employees overwhelmingly voted to join LIUNA Local 11, marking one of the state’s largest union victories. This initiative not only improved the working conditions for these laborers but also set a precedent for unionizing large-scale infrastructure projects.

In addition to organizing unions, Martire has been a key advocate for legislative reforms. He played a vital role in helping Montgomery County, Maryland, pass prevailing wage laws to ensure fair compensation for workers.
